Remove the technology
Don’t dive into social media
Free social media networks encourage small businesses to do their own marketing (or think they are).
Often what they are doing isn’t marketing at all, they’re just producing noise and wondering why it doesn’t work.
Diving straight in to using social media is like piping out the frosting before you’ve baked a cake. Before deciding which tactics to use you really need to consider which are best – not just free.
Social media is just one tactic you might use and it may not be the right one.
If you have nothing to say or say the wrong things, you’re just going to let more people know it faster than ever before.
Lets pretend the technology doesn’t exist
Forget the technology – get your marketing message right and then choose the right media to help you to share it. It may not even be digital.
Most small business get most of their sales from personal recommendation and referrals. What are you doing to cultivate those relationships?
Bigger business get most of their sales from advertising in printed media and almost all the major brands use TV and radio advertising. Social media really isn’t the only answer.
Even more important, make sure you do a business plan before you dive into marketing! If you don’t know how many sales you need, what your profit margins are, who your competition is, what you cashflow needs to cover, or how to build a great sales process and reputation you could end up losing more money than you make and all the marketing in the world won’t fix that!
