Decisions are like hats, haircuts and tattoos
Making decisions doesn’t have to be hard.
I believe that more people fail from failing to make a timely decision than from making the wrong one.
If you make a decision that proves to be wrong you can usually correct it (we’re talking about business here, not open-heart surgery). If you procrastinate about making a decision it can take up so much time and energy that everything goes to pot in the meantime and you can be left without any power to decide anything.
When you make a decision you usually know pretty quickly if it was wrong or right so stop torturing yourself and dive in.
If, despite this very simple advice, you still find it difficult to make decisions, these words from James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, might help:
Think about a decision as a hat, a haircut, or a tattoo. Most decisions are like hats. Try one and if you don’t like it, take if off and try another. Some decisions are like haircuts. You can fix a bad one, but it might take a few weeks. A few decisions are like tattoos. Once you make them, you have to live with them. When you’re dealing with an irreversible choice – rare in business, move slowly and think carefully.
Always try to choose the decision that gives you more options later down the line.
