Power and Choice

Are you in control of your business? How much power and choice do you have?

Work Smart Not Hard Tip No. 44 in a series written for Indie Cambs

It may feel that the control we have over our own destinies is being eroded so it’s a good time to remember that as independent business owners we still have more choices than most.

When I ask people why they started their own business they usually say they wanted to have more choice and more freedom about how they spend their time and how they work.

Having choices is the ultimate power.

While tax policy is largely outside of our control, our earning power and profitability absolutely are not. This may mean having to make some changes. It may feel that we are being “done to”, but we are still in control.

Businesses don’t thrive on economic forecasts; they thrive on creativity and capability.

You may have started your business to do something you love and if that’s the case and you’re not making money, now might be a good time to ask what it is you REALLY want. In his best-selling book, nearly 100 years ago, Napoleon Hill said, “Desire is the starting point of all achievement.”

If your desire to make money is greater than your desire to do what you love, you have the power to make changes. How your business earns money and creates profit is based on how confidently you price and how effectively you use your time.

In every economic situation, opportunities shift rather than disappear. Demand changes shape. Customers behave differently. The businesses that stay visible, responsive and confident tend to pick up momentum while others hesitate.
