How networking works

Imagine going to a series of events where you meet a lot of different people. You find out their name and what they do but not much else. Maybe you follow up with an email / phone call / WhatsApp and arrange to have a longer chat. Maybe you have contacts in common. You might find you can do business together but most often not.  Then what?

Now imagine registering to go to an event where (with their permission) you get a list of all the people you might meet there and are encouraged to find out more about them BEFORE you meet. The conversation you have when you DO meet will be very different and the way you follow up afterwards will be very different.

Now add an online forum where you can carry on your conversations with minimum effort, building trust, helping each other, introducing other people, exploring different topics.

That’s when networking works.

All it needs is for you to show up at the meetings, make the connections, follow up and have some great conversations.

And repeat.

Often.

It doesn’t work as a one-off. It takes time to get to know people. It takes time to build trust.

With a little commitment, networking is a wonderful way to make connections, find suppliers and clients and make friends. Often lifelong friends.
