What do you do when the world is chaotic?

When chaos seems to be the norm, how do we run our businesses?

Work Smart Not Hard Tip No. 43 in a series written for Indie Cambs

From AI to wars, politics, supply chains, prices, DEI issues and more, it’s easy to feel that we’re not able to influence anything very much.

If you sometimes feel like this, here’s a very simple strategy that always works:

Make three lists
1. The things you can’t change
2. The things you CAN change
3. The things you can change NOW.

Now do some of the things on the third list and you’ll immediately feel better. As we take action on the things we CAN influence we feel more empowered and in control. The more action we take, the more we feel we can take on some of the harder things.

This is a technique described in Stephen Covey’s book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

One example of where we have control in the current chaos is whether we choose to use AI, and if we do, what options we have.

We can’t change the way AI is proliferating.
We can change how we engage with AI.
We can choose right NOW to find ethical and sustainable ways to use it.

Even the smallest steps puts us back in control and from there we can move forward.
